General Motors (GM) has recently initiated a significant recall affecting nearly 600,000 vehicles in the United States, including various Cadillac models, due to potential engine issues that could lead to engine damage or failure.
Overview of the Recall
The recall encompasses certain 2021–2024 models equipped with 6.2L V8 gas engines, specifically:
-
Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV
-
Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe
-
GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL
The issue stems from potential manufacturing defects in the connecting rod and crankshaft components, which may result in engine damage or failure. GM has linked this defect to 12 crashes and 12 injuries in the U.S.
Inspection and Repair Process
GM dealers will inspect the engines of affected vehicles and perform necessary repairs or replacements. For vehicles that pass inspection, GM will provide higher viscosity oil along with a new oil cap and filter.
Background and Investigation
This recall follows a January investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into nearly 878,000 GM vehicles over similar engine failures. GM’s own review identified over 28,000 related complaints and incidents, including more than 14,000 cases of propulsion loss.
Additional Recalls
In addition to the engine-related recall, GM has issued other recalls affecting Cadillac modes
-
Brake Fluid Warning Light Issue: Over 449,000 SUVs and pickups, including the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, are being recalled due to a software issue that may prevent the low brake fluid warning light from illuminating, potentially leading to reduced braking performance.
-
Transmission Issue: Nearly 462,000 diesel-engine pickup trucks and SUVs, including the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, are being recalled due to a transmission issue that can cause rear wheels to lock, increasing the risk of a crash.
-
Seat-Belt Malfunction: More than 484,000 large SUVs, including the 2021 and 2022 Cadillac Escalade, are being recalled to fix a problem that can cause third-row seat belts to malfunction.
- The recall covers certain Cadillac Escalades and Escalade ESVs; Chevrolet Silverado 1500s, Suburbans and Tahoes; as well as GMC Sierra 1500s, Yukons and Yukon XLs between model years 2021 and 2024.
